300: Rise of an Empire

2014

6

"300: Rise of an Empire" showcases moments of brilliance, with its meticulously crafted action sequences and stunning visuals drawing viewers into its epic world. However, the excessive use of blood splatters in the fight scenes proves to be a distracting element, detracting from the otherwise captivating action on screen. Despite the film's initial promise, especially with its breathtaking 3D scenes in the opening moments, the overemphasis on gore leaves audiences wanting more restraint in its execution.

While the 2D version seems to mitigate some of these issues, the overall impact of the film could have been significantly heightened with a more balanced approach to the depiction of violence. By toning down the gratuitous bloodshed, "300: Rise of an Empire" could have allowed its action and 3D elements to emphasize the cinematic experience.

The film boasts breathtaking battle sequences set against the backdrop of the Civil War, showcasing incredible stunts and spectacular fight choreography that keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

One of the film's standout features is its portrayal of vampires as genuinely menacing creatures, brought to life through impressive makeup and special effects which are enhanced in 3D. Their eerie presence adds a palpable sense of danger and suspense to the narrative, enhancing the overall tension of the film.

Despite its technical achievements, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" struggles to fully reconcile its outlandish premise with its more serious historical elements. While the absurdity of the concept may initially intrigue viewers, it also runs the risk of detracting from the film's overall impact, leaving some audiences questioning the coherence of the storyline.

"Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" remains an entertaining and visually stunning spectacle that offers a unique twist on both history and the vampire genre.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

2014

6

Historical, Action

An epic story, wonderful actors and an amazing backdrop and landscape. This film should be unstoppable but doesn't quite match up to the sum of all the parts. It is a good film but somehow feels like it should have been better. The story of Moses given the full Hollywood treatment is an experience definitely worth watching. Some of the landscapes and city backdrops in Egypt are impressive.

[Edit] Watching in VR does make this much more immersive and closer to the action. The pitched battle scenes and cityscapes in Egypt are so much more alive and engaging. Some scenes you do seem almost too close, but overall they give much more benefit to the 3D effects.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

2016

10

FANTASY

Simply stunning. So this film had all the advantages of following on from the hugely successful Harry Potter films, and using the world which everyone already found enthralling. So budget and actors were all excellent. Nevertheless, this is an excellent film with a great storyline and great opportunity for 3D enhancement. The animators on the film did a wonderful job and the scenes in the suitcase with fantastical creatures showed enormous imagnation and great 3D elements. Simple scenes were transformed with magical enhancements such as arriving at the apartment and the cooking scene where the dessert strudel is assembled. Recapturing the Fantastic Beasts is one of the major themes of the movie and recapturing Niffler gives an opportunity to show off 3D directly with jewellery flying towards you as Newt jumps, twists and eventually falls forward and does finally pick up the creature. The other main strand of the storyline is more mysterious and is focused on identifying an Obscurial, a parasite that develops inside magically gifted children when their abilities are suppressed. The imagery for this is again excellent, and the scenes flying across New York as this creature show off the 3D in motion. This is a film which is perfect for use with VR to see the 3D up close. 3A Recommended.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

2012

7

Teen, Superhero

"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" offers audiences another dive into the realm of anti-heroism, as Johnny Blaze grapples with his demonic alter ego while embarking on a mission of redemption. The film presents a series of exhilarating set pieces and visually stunning scenery, all of which are enhanced by its immersive 3D presentation. From fiery battles against supernatural foes to heart-stopping chases through desolate landscapes, "Spirit of Vengeance" immerses viewers in a visually captivating and dynamic cinematic experience that effectively showcases the darker, grittier side of the Marvel universe.

Despite boasting a strong cast, including Nicolas Cage's charismatic portrayal of Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, the film falls short of greatness. While the action sequences and visual effects are undeniably impressive, "Spirit of Vengeance" struggles to fully capitalize on its potential, leaving certain aspects of its narrative feeling underdeveloped. However, for fans of the anti-hero genre and those drawn to morally ambiguous characters, the film still offers an entertaining and visually striking adventure that is sure to leave an impact.

Ghosts of the Abyss

2003

10

Documentary

One of my most treasured blu rays is this docu-film of the investigation of the Titantic, using cutting edge submarines to explore the wreck plus mini submarines to go into the wreck for the first time since it sank. The preparation, submarines and Titanic footage is all in 3D and is fascinating

Gravity

2013

8

"Gravity" is an awe-inspiring cinematic achievement that transports viewers into the vast expanse of space, captivating them with its stunning visuals and gripping narrative. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney deliver standout performances, anchoring the film with their compelling portrayals of astronauts stranded in orbit after a catastrophic accident. Their chemistry and emotional depth bring an authenticity to their characters' struggle for survival, drawing audiences into their harrowing journey against the backdrop of the infinite cosmos.

While the 3D space centre is undeniably impressive, serving as a stunning visual showcase of the wonders of space exploration, it ultimately takes a backseat to the film's riveting story and awe-inspiring scenery. Director Alfonso Cuarón's masterful use of cinematography and visual effects creates a sense of immersion that transports viewers into the weightless vastness of space, where every moment is fraught with tension and uncertainty. The film captures breath-taking beauty of Earth seen from orbit to the haunting silence of the vacuum beyond,

This picture's visuals and gripping storytelling reminds us of the fragile beauty of our planet and the enormity of space around it.

Green Lantern

2011

5

Green Lantern" emerges as a refreshing addition to the superhero genre, offering audiences a unique take on the iconic DC Comics character. While it may not achieve the status of a classic superhero film, it manages to carve out its own niche within the canon with its distinct blend of action, adventure, and sci-fi elements. The film introduces viewers to the intergalactic world of the Green Lantern Corps, immersing them in a universe filled with alien civilizations, cosmic threats, and the awe-inspiring power of the Green Lantern ring.

Despite its mixed reception, "Green Lantern" boasts some interesting 3D elements that enhance the viewing experience without overshadowing the story. From breathtaking space battles to mesmerizing displays of the Green Lantern ring's power, the film effectively utilizes 3D technology to transport audiences into the heart of the action. These immersive visual effects serve to complement the narrative, adding depth and dimension to the film's fantastical world while allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in the epic scope of the story.

Guns n' Roses: Appetite for Democracy

6

Music

It is an excellent recording of the concert. Probably the best 3d concert I have seen but suffers because the 3d element does not add too much to the concert experience. The view of the guitarist up close and the drummer is good but becomes standard very quickly. The directors here up the experience with the two gantries which enable Axl and the guitarists to perform above the audience. The flying piano is truly a first for me and does show the 3d plus a great song performance. The acrobats using the silks to whirl above the stage are an excellent idea but don't seem to highlight the 3D particularly, while the view from the stage towards the audience works extremely well. The main take away from this for me is that it highlighted quite a few GnR songs that I wanted to listen to again.

Hubble 3D

2010

7

Sci Fi, Documentary

Hubble 3D is a documentary about the space telescopes launch and maintenance flights and the astronauts who completed them. There are some stunning true 3D sequences of the space shuttle in space, including scenes in the space shuttle and in the shuttle bay while they are fixing and enhancing the telescope. It includes some history and build up to the launch but mostly focuses on the maintenance flights to fix and enhance and extend the life of the Hubble Telescope. There is then also the scenes of space, galaxies, stars, black holes and universe as a whole, some which truly are jaw dropping (particularly on a VR device). I would say there is a little too much reliance on sequences where you are moving through dots of light to show 3D, but otherwise well worth finding and adding to your collection

I Robot

6

Sci Fi, Action

A great blockbuster movie bringing a more grimy and dirty underbelly to Isaac Asimov original story. The 3d was very good but in some places almost overdone with the the viewing camera spinning around such as at the climax. Unfortunately that's likely to put off those you find 3D makes them seasick or worse. The revised story was an intelligent alteration, not just about showing off 3D. I did find the robots just looked a bit too perfect within the urban settings, but a minor point.

Iceman 3D

2014

5

Teen

Excellent start using 3D elements in the film. Three captives frozen in time from the Ming dynasty escape their confinement and explore modern Hong Kong. It has to be said upfront that this is aimed deliberately at a teen audience and is in Cantonese with English subtitles. Having said that it is acrobatic and uses the 3d elements often to show off the backdrop of the city. There were comic elements with the exploding toilet. Some of the green screen work is clear.

8

While the film's narrative succeeds in delivering an entertaining and action-packed experience that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy. With its blend of epic battles, divine intervention, "Immortals" offers a thrilling cinematic journey.

Independence Day: Resurgence

2016

6

Independence Day: Resurgence" never quite captures the spirit of the iconic predecessor and falls short of replicating its magic. While it offers a decent cinematic experience, the sequel never quite manages to evoke the same sense of awe and excitement that made the original film a classic. Despite the return of familiar faces and the introduction of new characters, the storyline feels somewhat lackluster, failing to fully engage viewers in the same way as its predecessor.

Additionally, while the film boasts 3D visuals, they fail to significantly enhance the viewing experience or add any meaningful impact to the storytelling. While there are moments of spectacle and grandeur, the 3D effects ultimately feel like a superficial addition rather than an integral part of the film.

Jumper

2008

7

This film presents an engaging experience with an innovative concept. It follows the story of a young man with the extraordinary ability to teleport, allowing him to instantly transport himself to any location on the planet. This innovative premise provides ample opportunities for the creative utilization of 3D technology, particularly during exhilarating sequences where the lead leaps between famous landmarks and iconic locations around the world. The dynamic visuals and integration of 3D effects enhance the sense of immersion, plunging viewers into the heart of the action.

While "Jumper" may not be without its flaws, its innovative premise and exhilarating action make it a worthy addition to the genre. Additionally, the film's ensemble cast delivers performances that draw viewers into the heart of the story, despite the inevitable conclusion of Kong's fate.

What sets this film apart is its effective utilization of 3D technology, which enhances the viewing experience in unexpected ways. Unlike some films where 3D feels like an afterthought or is primarily reserved for big action set pieces, "Man of Steel" integrates 3D throughout many scenes of the movie. Pacific Rim

2013

7

In the colossal clash of titans, "Pacific Rim" emerges as a visually stunning spectacle that pits towering machines against monstrous adversaries from the depths of the ocean. Directed by visionary Guillermo del Toro, the film plunges audiences into a world teetering on the brink of annihilation, where humanity's last hope lies in the colossal Jaegers, massive robotic warriors controlled by skilled pilots.

The sense of scale is breath-taking, as towering behemoths battle amidst the backdrop of crumbling cityscapes and churning ocean waves.

The film's narrative is compelling and well-executed, but there is a sense that it could have further leveraged the potential of 3D technology to enhance the viewing experience. While the visual effects are undeniably impressive, there are moments where the depth and immersion of 3D could have been utilized to even greater effect, drawing audiences deeper into the action.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

2011

7

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" sails into theatres with all the rollicking adventure and quirky charm that fans of the franchise have come to expect. Directed by Rob Marshall, this fourth instalment in the series brings Captain Jack Sparrow back to the high seas in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth, leading to a treasure trove of thrills, humour, and unexpected twists.

One of the film's most notable strengths lies in its constant inventiveness, both in its narrative and visual presentation. From the treacherous jungles of the Caribbean to the depths of the ocean, "On Stranger Tides" offers a plethora of exotic locales and imaginative set pieces that lend themselves to the 3D format. The film immerses viewers in a world where danger lurks around every corner.

But beyond its stunning visuals, "On Stranger Tides" also boasts an excellent story and strong characterizations that anchor the film amidst its fantastical elements. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow with his trademark blend of wit and eccentricity, delivering a performance that is as entertaining as it is unpredictable. Alongside him, newcomers such as Penélope Cruz's fiery Angelica add depth and intrigue to the ensemble cast, creating a dynamic mix of personalities that keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.

"On Stranger Tides" does occasionally succumb to the pitfalls of formulaic storytelling. The plot can feel somewhat familiar at times, relying on familiar tropes and plot devices. However, the film's strong performances and sheer sense of adventure help to offset these minor shortcomings, ensuring that the overall experience remains thoroughly enjoyable.

Pompeii

2014

6

"Pompeii" offers a grand canvas for the potential of 3D elements, but unfortunately, falls short of delivering the immersive experience audiences might expect. Despite the looming threat of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the film fails to instill the necessary sense of dread and urgency, leaving the impending disaster feeling somewhat lacking in impact. The visuals, while ambitious, struggle to fully captivate, failing to transport viewers into the heart of the ancient city on the brink of destruction.

While the film boasts a visually impressive recreation of ancient Pompeii, complete with elaborate sets and breath-taking vistas, its shortcomings lie in its storytelling and character dynamics. The plot feels somewhat lightweight, lacking the depth and complexity needed to fully engage audiences beyond the spectacle of the impending disaster. Additionally, the chemistry between the lead actors fails to ignite, leaving their interactions feeling somewhat flat and uninspired. Despite its grand ambitions, "Pompeii" ultimately struggles to rise above its shortcomings, resulting in a film that fails to leave a lasting impression.

R.I.P.D.

2013

6

"R.I.P.D." ventures into the afterlife with a clever twist on the buddy cop genre, pairing a grizzled veteran cop and a fresh-faced recruit who are both, well, dead. The premise promises a blend of supernatural action and comedic banter, and while the film delivers on some fronts, it ultimately falls short of reaching its full potential. The story, while entertaining enough, struggles to find its footing, with pacing issues and a lack of cohesion hindering the overall experience.

"R.I.P.D." does truly shines is in its inventive use of 3D technology. in the scenes where the characters are paused in a frozen state, allowing the heroes to navigate through a surreal landscape of suspended motion. In these moments, the 3D effects come alive, adding depth and dimension to the on-screen action. It's a visual treat that injects surprising visuals into the film, showcasing the potential of 3D when used creatively.

Despite its shortcomings, "R.I.P.D." manages to deliver moments of genuine humour and charm, thanks in large part to the chemistry between its two leads. Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds bring their characters to life with a playful dynamic that injects the film with a sense of fun and camaraderie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

2017

7

Fantasy, Sci Fi

Entertaining Spiderman Movie fully incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic universe this is really aimed at the teen market but actually with plenty of humour to keep adults engaged and lots of action for the kids. Tom Holland is a fantastic Spiderman with enough paranoia and self doubt to bring depth to the character. Plus there are a few scene stealing cameos by Zendaya. In terms of 3D there is plenty of opportunity for the extra depth to be shown off in the scenes where Spiderman swings around the Queens area of New York, plus the major battle between Spiderman and Vulture (Michael Keaton) culminating in an epic section on the beach with fires and smoke surrounding them as they grapple for the knockout punch. Overall I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to and will look forward to the next in the series.

7

From the thundering roar of the engines to the beauty of the island landscape, every aspect of the race is brought to life with clarity and depth. The Green Hornet

2011

4

"The Green Hornet" swings into action with a mix of flashy 3D sequences and tongue-in-cheek humour aimed squarely at a teen audience. While the film offers some reasonable 3D scenes that add a touch of visual flair, there are moments where the emphasis on spectacle feels more like a gimmick than an integral part of the storytelling. Indeed, some of the 3D effects seem to be included purely for the sake of the technology, rather than enhancing the overall cinematic experience.

At the helm of the film is a lead actor who brings a larger-than-life presence to the role, albeit in a manner that may come across as overly theatrical to some viewers. The character's over-the-top antics and exaggerated personality may appeal to the film's target demographic, but they also risk alienating audiences. Despite its flaws, "The Green Hornet" is a light-hearted and superficial superhero romp.

However, while the film boasts all the trappings of a blockbuster, including impressive special effects and high-octane action sequences, it ultimately falls short of fully engaging its audience. Despite its best efforts, "World War Z" struggles to connect on a deeper level, leaving viewers longing for a more immersive experience that delves into the emotional and psychological toll of the apocalypse.

While "World War Z" may not reach the heights of some of its predecessors in the horror genre, it still manages to deliver an entertaining ride that is sure to satisfy fans looking for a thrilling addition to their zombie movie marathon.
