So it is really a different experience watching 3D movies in VR and while some people who already watch movies this way and understand this, many people buying the Apple Vision Pro will now be understanding how truly immersive this can be, and what films it does (or does not) work with. Our rating system https://3drevival.wixsite.com/3dadviser/3d-films is for 3D movies watched on a 3D TV so this blog post is a first opportunity to explain what films are improved by the immersive experience.

My first experience of this was watching Exodus: Gods and Kings. Watching in VR does make this much more immersive and closer to the action. The pitched battle scenes and cityscapes in Egypt are so much more alive and engaging. Some scenes you do seem almost too close, but overall they give much more benefit to the 3D effects. Ultimately it does not totally save the movie which was critised for historical inaccuracies and slow pacing, the best 3D movies have to be great movies in 2D too. But does make it worth re-watching particularly for the 3D.

Having refined what elements are improved by the VR experience, What films would stand out on Apple's Vision Pro? Here are my top 5 so far (and this is a work in progress).

1. Avatar

So you may have seen it before but really not quite like in VR. If you can cope with the sudden movements in VR then this is an amazing experience.

2. Prometheus

This entry into the Alien epic features is a superb film and the 3D effects are an amazing extension of the world.

3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The third trilogy of the Star Wars franchise opens strongly and the 3D effects and sci fi world benefit from being placed almost into the action in places.

4. Dune

Another fantasy world brought to life further with 3D action and effects, plus a great film, with wonderful book heritage to draw upon.

5. Dredd

The futuristic fantasy world of Judge Dredd brought to life becomes even more gritty and realistic.

So this list does not include some of the documentaries and natural world features which are top of the 3D list to see, also it does not include 3D music videos which I'm really hoping does bring a real improvement to. I've yet to see a 3d music feature which is improved significantly by 3D but immersion into a concert would be an amazing feeling and something hopefully that will be enabled by this technology. 3A.
